20 Not Exceptionally Random Acts of Kindness to Help You Celebrate #Givember

If you haven’t already heard, here at the Community Foundation we’re turning November into #Givember!

What is #Givember, you say? We’re glad you asked! #Givember is a special month long celebration we cooked up to help us celebrate #GivingTuesday on November 28th. All month long, when you give $10 or more to the Community Foundation’s #Givember campaign, we’ll give $100* in surprise funding to a local nonprofit in one of our four focus areas: Arts and Culture, Community Development, Education, or Health and Human Services. Even cooler, we’ll let you choose which focus area you want to support!

To get you in the spirit of generosity, we’ve compiled a list of 20 (not exceptionally random) acts of kindness that you can use right-now-today to spread some extra love and kindness around in the world. (And who doesn’t want to be the spreader of extra love and kindness??)

  1. Buy coffee and donuts, and bring them into work for your co-workers one morning to brighten everyone’s day.
  2. Offer to babysit for one of your friends on a Friday night so they can enjoy a date night out with their significant other.
  3. If you’re just thinking nice things about a person, text them to let them know.
  4. Smile at a mother whose baby is crying. Everyone else is scowling at her.
  5. Compliment an older person’s outfit. It happens less and less as you get older.
  6. Ask a grandparent to tell you a story about when they were your age. Listen to it.
  7. Leave a nice review for one of your old teachers on RateMyTeacher.com.
  8. Tell a younger sibling how much you’ve learned from them.
  9. Write an anonymous note to your co-workers telling them that they are appreciated!
  10. Like someone’s selfies on Instagram, even if you hate selfies.
  11. Send your best friend flowers just because.
  12. Pay for the person’s lunch who is in line behind you. You might start a chain reaction of good vibes that lasts all afternoon!
  13. Tell a stranger in the dressing room who is shopping alone that something looks great on them.
  14. If you’re saying nice things about a person who is not present, text them to let them know.
  15. Send one of your children’s teachers an email letting them know how much of a difference they make to you and your child.
  16.  As someone special to you about their favorite charity/cause; make an anonymous donation in their name.
  17.  Send your parents a letter on your birthday telling them how much they mean to you.
  18. Purchase a few gift cards for fast food restaurants; give them to homeless people so they can use them to buy a warm meal with food of their choice.
  19. Mow the lawn, rake the leaves, or bring a meal to an elderly neighbor of yours who doesn’t get around very well any more.
  20. Donate at least $10 to the #Givember campaign here at the Community Foundation and earn $100 in special #GivingTuesday funding for a local non-profit in one of our 4 focus areas! (Forgive our shameless plug – but really, it is an exceptional way to make a small gift that creates a BIG impact! You can donate here!)
