How Personalized Philanthropy Helps Babies in Allen County Thrive

Every year, 500 new mothers in Allen County celebrate a life-changing moment—bringing a baby into the world. But for many, understanding safe sleep practices can make all the difference. That’s where personalized philanthropy stepped in to help.

Last year, Healthier Moms and Babies launched Every Birth Network, which includes a safe sleep education program. To promote this practice, they wanted to provide new mothers with onesies displaying the ABCs of safe sleep—alone, on their backs, in a crib. With 500 births annually, the program needed $4,500 to fund the onesies.

This request was a perfect fit for our Agile Grant Program, but the 2024 funds had already been allocated. That’s when our concierge services came into play.

We reached out to a dedicated fundholder whose late father-in-law had established an endowment in 2006 to honor a family vision of supporting basic needs. For 14 years, this fundholder has thoughtfully stewarded this legacy, always asking insightful questions about the impact of their giving.

When presented with the request, the fundholder immediately recognized its alignment with the fund’s mission and stepped in to fully fund the $4,500 needed. Their generosity brought the safe sleep initiative to life, directly impacting hundreds of families served by Healthier Moms and Babies.

This collaboration exemplifies the power of personalized philanthropy and the unique role the Community Foundation plays in helping fundholders maximize their impact.
