Preserving the Past, Inspiring the Future: Supporting Historic Fort Wayne

On a crisp autumn morning, the wooden gates of Historic Fort Wayne creak open, revealing a world frozen in time. The rhythmic clang of a blacksmith’s hammer echoes across the courtyard as costumed reenactors move through the Fort, sharing stories of frontier life with wide-eyed schoolchildren. For a moment, history is alive—tangible, real, and deeply connected to the present.

For nearly 50 years, the reconstructed Old Fort has stood as a gateway to the past, inviting visitors to step into the early 19th century and experience the stories of those who shaped this region. But like the original Fort before it, time and weather have taken their toll, and without urgent repairs, this beloved landmark faces an uncertain future.

Historic Fort Wayne, Inc., a dedicated 501(c)(3) nonprofit, has been leading the charge to preserve this vital piece of history. Unlike many historic sites, the Fort receives no state or federal funding, relying entirely on the generosity of donors and community partners to continue its mission. Thanks to this support, the first two phases of much-needed restoration are already underway. The next critical stage—repairing the Commander’s Building—awaits. Following this, the Junior Officers’ Building and the Barracks will be restored, ensuring that the Fort remains a place of education, engagement, and connection for future generations.

At the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne, we believe that inspiring places strengthen our community, bring people together, and preserve the stories that shape our identity. That’s why Historic Fort Wayne’s mission aligns with our Inspiring Places pillar—ensuring that the places that define our past continue to inspire our future.

This restoration effort depends on the support of this community. Whether donating, volunteering, or simply sharing its story, you can help keep history alive. To learn more or contribute to the restoration, visit The Old Fort website.

Together, we can honor our past while building a stronger, more connected future for Fort Wayne. For more information on this or other local giving opportunities, contact a member of our Philanthropic Services Team today!
