Stories of Impact: Hoot Camp Hits the Right Note

Our Engage Grant program provides up to $3,000 in funding to first-time applicants for operational support or specific programs. Designed for organizations that are new to the Community Foundation, these grants open doors to new partnerships and community impact.

This summer, an Engage Grant was instrumental (pun intended!) in supporting the very first Hoot Camp, a week-long music camp for Fort Wayne youth. Forty-five students in grades 4–12 came together to explore ear training and improvisation on instruments like fiddle, guitar, mandolin, banjo, upright bass, cello, and viola. With the guidance of The Debutants—Fort Wayne–based touring performers and licensed educators—students quickly found their rhythm.

The impact was immediate: students who arrived skeptical left inspired, parents praised the experience, and one group of campers is even starting their own string band to play songs they learned together. Scholarships made possible by the grant ensured that students of all backgrounds could join in this creative, collaborative, and confidence-building experience.

And the music continues—Hoot Camp will return next summer in late July, with dates to be announced soon!
