Honoring a Legacy of Service: The Jerry and Linda Vandeveer Public Safety Scholarship

At the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne, we aim to help individuals and families make their charitable giving more impactful. We support this by helping people establish funds that reflect their passions and values. A prime example is the Jerry and Linda Vandeveer Public Safety Scholarship Fund, created to honor the couple’s deep commitment to public safety—a cause that was close to their hearts.

Jerry and Linda Vandeveer were beloved advocates for Allen County, dedicating their lives to making Fort Wayne a stronger community. Through their business, The Wood Shack, they played a key role in revitalizing the neighborhood and enhancing downtown. One of their greatest achievements was relocating the Law Enforcement/Firefighters Memorial to Wells Street, now a meaningful gathering place honoring public safety personnel.

In 2016, the Allen County Board of Commissioners honored the Vandeveers with the first annual Jerry and Linda Vandeveer Allen County Impact Award, recognizing their many contributions. Sadly, Linda passed away later that year after a battle with colon cancer. Jerry carried on their shared mission by raising awareness about cancer screening until his passing in early 2024.

To ensure their legacy endures, the Allen County Commissioners established the Jerry and Linda Vandeveer Public Safety Scholarship. This scholarship supports students pursuing careers in firefighting, law enforcement, and emergency medical services—fields the Vandeveers held dear.

The goal for this scholarship is to raise enough funds to offer an annual $4,000 award, distributed as a renewable $1,000 scholarship while preserving the principal to ensure the fund’s sustainability.

The Community Foundation plays a vital role in managing the scholarship fund. We oversee the scholarship selection committee, which includes respected community members, public safety officials, and professionals in law and finance. This committee reviews applications to ensure recipients reflect the Vandeveers’ passion for public service. The Community Foundation also manages the distribution of scholarship awards, helping to foster the next generation of public safety professionals.

By supporting the Jerry and Linda Vandeveer Public Safety Scholarship, you can help carry forward their legacy of service, dedication, and community impact. Donate today to help empower future public safety professionals and build a safer community for all.
