The Youth Empowered Philanthropy (YEP) group has been making significant strides this year toward achieving its goals. Students have prepared their annual grant cycle, which resulted in over 70 applications from local nonprofits seeking funding and volunteer collaboration from the students. Currently, YEP students are conducting site visits with staff members of nonprofits to learn more about their mission and grant requests. At the upcoming April meeting, YEP will report on their experiences and make final granting decisions.
In addition to their grant work, YEP students have been actively engaged in community outreach and volunteerism. From wrapping presents for families in need with Big Brothers Big Sisters to assisting Healthier Moms and Babies in organizing essential supplies, volunteering provides the opportunity to get out into the community while creating bonding experiences for the group of students.
The dedication of our YEP student leadership team has been instrumental in driving YEP’s success this year. Leading the charge are:
YEP Chair: Sharice Sykes, Northrop High School
Vice Chair: Maria Tan, Canterbury High School
Grant Chair: Madeline Graves, New Haven High School
Volunteer Coordinator: Charles Nwakanma, Canterbury High School
Their commitment underscores the positive impact YEP continues to have on the community. YEP is the only youth philanthropy pod in Allen County. Gifts made to YEP will supplement the students grantmaking, which allows students the opportunity to make real decisions with real money to create real impact in Allen County.
